We got in on Gwinnett’s Burger Week 2023

I was excited about checking out Gwinnett County’s Burger Week 2023. I love the idea of an entire week dedicated to one of America’s favorite sandwiches and I wish other metro-Atlanta communities would host one, too.
I mean great burgers draw crowds. Anne’s Snack Bar’s “Ghetto Burger” in Atlanta drew people from around the world. When Anne Price, the founder, passed away at age 72 in 2015, Atlanta lost a food legend. I remember standing in line for four hours for a “Ghetto Burger” and the experience was awesome.
I mean there’s nothing like getting a “Ghetto Burger,” where the owner yells at customers to hurry up with their order, where you meet all kinds of people while waiting in line and you finally figure out how to team up to split an order with total strangers just to taste one of those super-sized burgers that Ms. Anne made by hand with everything on it!
Well, anyway, we randomly selected Uncle Jack’s Tavern in Lawrenceville from Gwinnett’s Burger Week list. I liked the name—Uncle Jack’s Tavern.
Uncle Jack’s was one of about two dozen restaurants that were selected by an application process for a spot to showcase in Burger Week, headlined as “March Meatness Returns.” The event was held March 19-25. Participating restaurants offered specialty burgers for $10 (+ tax and gratuity).
We visited Uncle Jack’s on a week day—late afternoon—and were able to park for free on the street right in front of the restaurant. They get a star for not having metered parking.
I liked the vibe as soon as we walked in. The restaurant has a modern décor, a bar, tall booths, and table seating on one side and an outdoor beer garden and bar on the other side. I noticed a sign promoting they even have an Open Mic Night.
We sat in the outdoor beer garden, which was covered. I shot some hoops while we waited for our food.
We ordered their $10 Burger Week special, the “Jack Jack Burger,” which consisted of 2 smashed wagyu beef patties double stacked with cheese and secret sauce, tomato relish puree, onions, pickles and bacon on a buttered potato bun.
We also ordered the “Truffle Mushroom Swiss” burger, which came with a tin of seasoned fries. This entree is a regular menu item.
Ahead of the burgers, we shared a big salad that scoop out of a larger bowl and divided into two bowls. We also ordered an appetizer. The waiter recommended the Uncle Jack’s signature in-house applewood smoked bacon as the appetizer. The bacon is served with two dipping sauces: house-made peanut butter and Chipotle maple glaze. The appetizer was incredible! You dip pieces of the thick strips of bacon into the warm, creamy peanut butter or maple syrup. I have never had anything like it.
Both of the burgers and the salad were also good. We had leftovers for lunch the next day.
The restaurant prides itself on “moderately-priced, scratched-made American food that is fresh.” The menu includes burgers, wings, honey-dipped fried chicken baskets, steak, tuna, salads and sandwiches and sides such as creamed spinach, crispy brussels sprouts and mashed Yukon potatoes. There are also brunch entrees including biscuits and bacon and eggs, and several tempting desserts such as peach cobbler and ice cream.
As part of Burger Week, a contest was held for the best burger, with customers casting votes online. The “Sunday Supper Burger,” created by Over the Top Burger Bar in Buford, took first place in this year’s People’s Choice Awards contest. The burger was a Sunday meal on a bun as described by the restaurant:
“Starting off with 1 All Beef Patty, we add Fried Chicken, Collard Greens, House Made Mac & Cheese, Fried Onions, BBQ Sauce, Fresh Cheddar & no defibrillator.” To view the winning burger:
