COLLARD GREEN CAFE, TUCKER, GA

Come hungry when you visit the Collard Green Cafe in Tucker, GA. It’s one of DeKalb County’s biggest hits, serving up down-home cooking with Southern hospitality. As customers enter the busy cafe, the line workers shout in unison “Welcome to the Collard Green Cafe!” And they thank every customer as they leave. They know how to make everyone feel welcome. It’s understable why everyone comes here—locals, regulars, the world. The vibe is definitely casual, no frills —your food is served in a to-go container, which works because most customers get take-outs.

Take your place in line and you’ll feel right at home as you sing along with the rest of the customers to the Motown sounds that fill the air. Val and I were quizzing each other about the cafe’s photo gallery in the rear showing images of artists such as Nat King Cole, Miles Davis, Barry White during their younger years.

The time passed quickly as we entertained ourselves with the photos and the music. When we got close to the menu board, we started plotting what we were going to eat. This is one of those places where you pick out your food cafeteria-style and watch as they serve generous portions. Some entrees such as fried fish, and breakfast items are cooked to order. So, be patient. Find a chair after you place your order. It’s worth the wait.

Thankfully, we were lucky enough to get a table during our visit. We ordered smothered turkey wings, which comes on a bed of rice and gravy with two sides. We chose macaroni and cheese and cabbage. On the second order, we went straight country and ordered pig’s feet, sweet potato souffle and of course, collard greens. We decided we could share in order to experience four different sides and two meats. We had a blueberry lemonade and a strawberry lemonade to wash it all down. Pictures of our orders are included in this post. When I tell you EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS… One more thing: There were no extra service charges or added-in gratuities, which made leaving a tip in the cup near the cashier far more pleasant.

I noted that breakfast and fried fish are served all day during their operating hours. We’ll be back to check out breakfast.

Collard Green Cafe is located at 1880 Mountain Industrial Blvd., Tucker, in a strip plaza. They’re open Tuesday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. 770-609-8324.
