Ahh: A date at Vickery’s Bar & Grill. Whenever I suggest going there, my wife always agrees. It is one of our favorite restaurants in Atlanta because its menu satisfies our love for contemporary Southern cuisine, seafood, sandwiches, Cuban food and more.

Vickery’s, which opened in 1983, is an Atlanta institution for good reason: The food is consistently good.

Shareables: We love the black bean soup, which is garnished with sour cream and green onions. Vickery’s has the best fried calamari I’ve ever had. I always order calamari as an appetizer. The calamari is served with onions, peppers and sweet chili sauce and sesame seeds. The fried green tomatoes, one of Val’s favorites, are also great

Val had the pan-seared trout over dill rice with asparagus and parsley lemon butter sauce. She tried it for the first time and enjoyed it. The asparagus was cooked perfectly—crisp, not wilted.

I had my favorite dish— the Low Country Seafood Saute, over creamy grits. The dish has shrimp, crabmeat, crawfish and andouille sausage in Bourbon butter. I must admit I haven’t ever ordered any other dish at Vickery’s because it’s the reason that I go there. It’s that good to me. Val, on the other hand, is experimental. She always lets me try her dishes and everything she orders has always been good. That’s what makes for a good date! I get to eat my dish and some of hers.

Vickery’s offers seating inside the restaurant as well as al fresco dining. It’s warming up and sitting outside is a nice place to eat and people watch.
