Celebrating freedom fighter John Evans’ 90th Birthday

A host of family, friends and elected officials attended the birthday celebration for freedom fighter John Evans, who turned 90 on Jan. 29, 2023. The birthday dinner was held on Saturday, Jan. 28, a day ahead of Evans’ milestone birthday. The celebration took place at the Porter Sanford Performing Arts & Community Center in DeKalb County, Georgia with several dignitaries and elected officials attending the event including Congressman Hank Johnson and his wife, DeKalb County Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson and DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond. The venue was decked out in purple and gold—Omega Psi Phi’s colors, a salute to Evans’ cherished fraternity. Evans is president of Operation Lead and a former president of the NAACP DeKalb County Branch, where he served 16 years as its leader; a former member of the MARTA Board of Directors and former member of the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners. Evans also is a former player of the Negro Baseball League. He has remained a tireless community activist who, despite a decrease in mobility with age, still marches and shows up to represent the most vulnerable in metro Atlanta.
