Weekend in NYC

Feb. 16, 2023 | BestLifeGlenn

We’re sharing this 2022 trip to encourage you to plan now, if you’re considering visiting the Big Apple and taking in a Broadway play in NYC in 2023. Broadway Week is held twice a year—there’s one in late January to early February, and again in September. 2-for-1 tickets are offered for many Broadway shows during Broadway Week, so you want to start planning.

We visited NYC during Labor Day weekend 2022, just ahead of Broadway Week. We went with our close friends, Al and Mae Jones. We missed out on the 2-for-1 Broadway Week, which took place after our visit. But we still had a great time. We ate, shopped, and saw the sights. Among the highlights: people watching in Times Square, and visiting the Oculus at the World Trade Center. The Oculus, which opened March 3, 2016, is considered one of the world’s most expensive train stations, built at a cost of $4 billion. We also snapped selfies, ate at cafes and shopped at Hudson Yards and the famed 5th Avenue, where I found a nice pair of Cole Haan shoes.

Times Square: Put on your walking shoes. See the sights and people in the city that never sleeps.

Street Eats: Quick bites on virtually every corner.

Taxi ride to Harlem for Melba’s was worth the trip for great soul food.

We were lucky to get seats outdoors. Eating al fresco at Melba’s was awesome: See my plate of ox tails, collard greens and yams? Mae had the same entree. Val had turkey wings, mac and cheese and collard greens and Al had chicken and waffles. Just look at those waffles.

The area where Melba’s is located has a number of worthy shops and restaurants. There was a vegan restaurant across the street that Val put on the list for our next trip. We plan to spend more time in Harlem, which has beautiful parks that we saw during our taxi ride from Times Square.

More selfies in front of tall buildings and tourist’s spots including the Oculus— that weird-looking building behind my head.

The “Friends” sign in the backdrop was picture perfect for another couples’ shot and to show off how I build my wardrobe around my shoes.

RISENY: Enjoyed NYC’s history, vibrant pop-cultural evolution at this part museum, part ride venue.

More selfies and shopping on NYC’s famed 5th Ave. Set your budget before you go.
