Crazy comedy, great time at VOF’s Dinner + A Show
Had a great time with my Voices of Faith(VOF) Church family at its June 16, Friday night, Dinner & A Show, which was presented by members of the church’s Performing Arts Ministry.
Elder Darrell Smith produced and played one of the leading roles—the Rev. Do Right— in this hysterically funny who-done-it-show entitled “The Case of the Missing Jewels.”
Each time that Rev. Do Right came out in a different wig, we were in stitches. And we stayed on edge as we were continually scolded by Big Mama, played by Betty Jean Thompson, who is one of VOF’s church mothers.
Rev. Do Right got up close and personal as he accused guests in the audience of theft. At one point, he even used a malfunctioning security wand to search some of us for the so-called stolen jewels.
We also had to break out into four groups and make up lyrics to assigned tunes to prove that we didn’t steal the jewels. People were on their cell phones listening to the assigned tunes and trying to create lyrics. Probably only three people among the 100 guests who attended the show could even carry the tunes—let along remember the lyrics composed by the group! When you can’t sing, you clap it out and that’s what I did.
The show was a great night out and the 3-course dinner was excellent. Along with salad, guests had a choice of brisket, baked chicken or Alfredo shrimp pasta as their main course, which included green beans or broccoli, and homemade cake.
Elder Smith (“Rev. Do Right”) said the VOF Performing Arts Ministry has been putting on Dinner and A Show for over 10 years.
“It was a sold-out event again this year. We had 100 tickets and we sold every one of them. We literally sell out every year,” said Elder Smith.
Bravo! is all that I can say.
Voices of Faith is under the leadership of Bishop Gary Hawkins, Sr. The event was held at the church’s Stone Mountain campus, 2500 Rockbridge Rd., S.W.
